May is National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, the perfect time to celebrate the sport we know and love.

Established in 1956, National Bike Month is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and is an opportunity to showcase bike safety and the benefits of bicycling, while encouraging people to give it a try.

As communities from coast to coast hold events and activities, we are celebrating by sharing some important safety tips, 3 great benefits of bicycling, and community events going on in and around Orange County.

We hope you’ll take the time to get out on your bike this month and share your appreciation of cycling with someone new.

Bike Safety Tips

First up, some safety reminders. At Bike Legal, we help clients who have been in cycling accidents to recover and get the settlements they need to move on with their lives. Trust us when we say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. While the sport is fun and has many benefits, it also presents risks. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always obey traffic laws
  • Stay alert
  • Wear a helmet
  • Make yourself visible
  • Use hand signals when riding in traffic
  • Make sure your bike is in good working condition

By riding responsibly, you can reap all of the positive benefits of riding a bike.

Benefits of Cycling

Why ride? Here are three great reasons.

  1. It makes you healthier

Consistent riding will improve your overall fitness level by improving bone strength, mood, stress levels, joint mobility, muscle strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and more. Plus, it’s fun, and who couldn’t use a little more fun in their lives?

2. It saves you money

By riding your bike instead of driving a car or paying for transportation, you can keep more of your hard-earned dollars in your pocket. Further, once you have a bike, it is a free way to entertain yourself.

3. It helps the environment

Riding a bike has practically no carbon footprint and does not cause pollution. While it might not be practical for every trip, if more people substitute car trips for bike trips, we can become more environmentally- and eco-friendly.

Now, let’s take a look at how you can join in the fun of Bike Month and even win some prizes!
